About the Song

The English hymn The Lily of the Valley was written in 1881 by Charles William Fry, a member of the Salvation Army in London. The tune commonly used today was adapted using a melody by William S. Hays, arranged by evangelist Ira D. Sankey

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Protestant missionary movements in Kerala (CMS, Salvation Army, Brethren, Pentecostal groups) introduced many English revival hymns.

The Malayalam hymn “യേശുവിൽ എൻ തോഴനെ കണ്ടേൻ” literally means “I found a friend in Jesus.”

It closely follows the theme and structure of the English hymn. Unlike the original hymn, the Malayalam translator is not well documented. Most hymn databases and lyric sites simply identify it as a traditional Malayalam translation of the English hymn.
